My home life, family, and BTWHS have all played pivotal roles in my life.

Edward J. Oakes, M.S., B.S.

President 2014 – 2016

Greetings!

Welcome to the Booker T. Washington High School of Texarkana, AR, National Alumni Association’s website. It is an honor and a blessing to be the President of this wonderful organization, in which I have been a participating member for many years.

I am a member of the BTWHS Class of ’64. After graduation from high school, I attended Bishop College in Dallas, Texas. I graduated with a B.A. in Business Administration and Economics. After college, I attended the United States Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. Upon on graduation, I earned my commission as an officer in the Navy. I remained on active duty for nine years before leaving the Navy while stationed at the DoD Computer Institute in Washington, DC, working as a Senior Technical Advisor and Instructor. I then worked there as a Federal civilian employee for three years before leaving the government for private employment supporting the Government, mostly the DoD. While working full-time, I earned a M.S. in Computer Systems Management.

I retired from my position as Director, Federal Systems Group, Advanced Systems Development, Inc. (ASD) after 28 years of service on May 31, 2012. I left ASD with more than 44 years of experience providing Information Technology (IT) support and management services in the Federal Government, in the military, and in private industry. I have been truly blessed. My home life, family, and BTWHS have all played pivotal roles in my life. We are a proud and strong organization. Yes, we are older and some of us move a bit more slowly, but we have tremendous joy and are amazingly adventurous. We were reminded of this as we reminisced and shared memories with old friends and classmates during the Reunion in Texarkana in July, 2014. We also found joy in seeking out and getting to know those alumni members who have remained virtually unknown over the years. Thank you Texarkana Chapter for providing such great memories.

It is clear that we are determined and I am excited about our prospects for continued strength and unity. Our BTWHS DNA is among the best. We stand tall with the best! After all, we are the Mighty Lions and we continue to roar!!!

Sincerely,

Edward J. Oakes, M.S., B.S.
